A meeting place of rivers and mountain ranges, no wonder the Romans, who founded the city, originally named it Confluentes. And Koblenz is as delightful a corner of Central Europe as you could ever hope to find, a place of ancient churches and crumbling fortifications. Though perhaps it’s best known as the gateway city to the Rhine Gorge, a base for exploring some beautiful surrounds.
The hotels naturally reflect this. There are some great places for a night or two contemplating adventure, and that offer some authentic Rhineland charm. At TravelMag, we’ve researched the modern and the traditional, and found this pleasantly diverse selection.
Hotel Sessellift
From €50/ night
Right next to Koblenz’s famous confluence, this traditional – by way of India – hotel is a great spot from which to explore the town. The Ehrenbreitstein Fortress is just a short walk away while the rooms are cosy and comfortable. There are views of the fortress and the surrounding countryside aplenty, and perhaps most important of all, this is by far and away the cheapest digs in town!
Hotel Jan van Werth
From €75/ night
A great value central location in a clean, traditional building filled with all the amenities you’d expect in a 21st Century hotel: we’re talking WiFi, en-suites, TVs… You know you’re in safe hands the moment you step into the lobby, crammed, as it is, with homelike and characterful ephemera, like a warm embrace welcoming you to a nice relaxing stay.
City-Hotel Kurfürst Balduin
From €75/ night
A model of German efficiency, which is great because the thing that’s being efficiently tended to is the quality of your stay. The smoothed surfaced modern interior here is perfect should you be wanting to prioritise comfort over character. There’s cable TV in all the rooms, free WiFi, and the breakfast buffet comes highly recommended. They’re also happy to hook you up with local boat trips and vineyard visits.
Altstadt Hotel Koblenz
From €95/ night
No, you didn’t read the price wrong. There’s good value and then there’s the Alstadt. Sure, it’s going to be a little more than some of the other places in town, but you get what you pay for and then some. The rooms are spacious and stylish, all with elegant parquet flooring. The building itself is majestic and right in the centre of town. And, finally, there’s even an onsite café: great for grabbing a coffee in in the morning, as you sit down to plan your day.
Hotel-Restaurant Weinhaus Grebel
From €75/ night
One of those “holiday comes to you” kind of places, on account of it also being (the clue’s in the name) the location of a fantastic restaurant. It’s a little away from the hustle and bustle of the old town, making it a fine place to come back to and relax after a day on the cobbled streets or, indeed, exploring the rich hinterland for which Koblenz is arguably even better known. And while the rooms may lack in the style department, they indisputably make up for it in comfort with all the necessary amenities provided.
