Chianti is one of the world’s oldest and most famous wines. Once upon a time, you needed to travel to the heart of Tuscany’s terraced hills to sip on the best of it, but now it’s possible to buy wines from both the region’s blockbuster and boutique wineries online.

Most people have heard of Chianti wine, Italy’s signature tipple, but they might not know exactly what it is. At its heart is Chianti Classico – a specific zone within the wider Chianti denominazione. The Medici dukes mapped the region out in 1716, making it one of the first wine regions in the world. Three centuries later, it’s still one of the world’s most established wines. The main grape here is Sangiovese but it can be blended with up to 20% of other grapes, so the taste differs dramatically from bottle to bottle. We’ve selected seven of the best Chianti wines you can buy online for a range of budgets and tastes.

Lamole di Lamole Chianti Classico 2017

This textbook chianti wine pairs perfectly with barbecued meats, steaks, game and strong cheeses – it’s gruff and smoky enough to handle the strongest flavours. The wine is a vibrant and deep ruby red colour, made from a blend of 95% Sangiovese and 5% Canaiolo grapes. There are notes of black cherry, forest fruits and oak, with a firm acidity too, so most suggest leaving it to soften. The organic winery was founded shortly after World War II, high in the hills of the Greve municipality. From $22.99.
