Berat is one of Albania’s top destinations thanks to its historic and natural attractions.
A top destination in southern Albania, Berat is known for its remarkably-preserved Ottoman architecture. Two sloped neighbourhoods look at each other through countless tall windows as the river Osumi flows in between, while the old fortress sits atop the hill. Crooked stone steps, secluded courtyards and panoramic spots punctuate the visit, providing quaint settings to enjoy genuine rural hospitality.
Unesco-listed, the town became popular long before Albania’s recent tourism boom. Many choose it for a day trip, but spending one or more nights is the best way to slow down and make the most of the local attractions. We have picked our favourite hotels, one for each of the town’s key locations.
Hotel Mangalemi
Locally known as Tomi, after its first owner, this was the first hotel to open in Berat after the fall of Communism, and has been run by the same family ever since. It sits next to the historic Mangalemi quarter, at the foot of the uphill road to the castle. At such an ideal location once stood the pasha’s palace, then considered one of the most beautiful in Albania. The hotel includes surviving parts of the palace, and features traditional wood-and-stone architecture throughout its rooms and communal spaces. The bright veranda provides an excellent setting to relax or enjoy local products at breakfast, while a museum-worthy collection of antiques and period furniture showcases the region’s heritage. Thirty years after opening, Mangalemi is still a reference point for hospitality in Berat. From €55
Berati Castle Hotel
The Kalaja (castle hill) is the hilltop district of Berat, a former fortress now in ruins. Lodging here offers easy access to the area’s vantage points and ancient monuments. Among the many family-run hotels and guesthouses to choose from, Berati Castle Hotel is only a few steps away from the main gate. Spacious rooms and great value add to the pleasant mix of traditional architecture and modern comforts, creating the perfect atmosphere to enjoy Albanian hospitality. Hearty traditional food and local wine are served at the restaurant. From €40
Hotel Muzaka
This small hotel is housed in a 17th-century building of the Gorica neighbourhood, on the left bank of the river Osum. Its ten rooms offer a quiet stay in a classic setting, some of which come with a view of the historic Mangalemi district on the other side of the river. A charming courtyard and riverfront tables are available to enjoy the restaurant’s selection of traditional food and Albanian wines. Breakfast is included with every booking. From 70
Hotel Colombo
Offering a starkly different vibe than most Berat hotels, Hotel Colombo favours luxury and opulence over tradition. Its dome and front columns nod curiosly at the White House, while a red carpet welcomes guests at the entrance. The interiors are spacious and elegant, including an impressive hall adorned with marble and columns. Quadruple rooms and junior suites are available. A lively pedestrian boulevard connects the hotel to the old town. From €66
Castle Park
Castle Park is the go-to option for a nature-themed stay in Berat. It is located a 30-minute walk away from the old town, and offers rooms and separate lodgings immersed in a forest setting. On top of local food and hospitality, the experience involves outdoor activities such as rafting on the river Osumi. Cooking classes are also available. The peculiar castle-like architecture adds a romantic touch to the hotel, while the bar and terrace provide stunning views of Berat and the Tomori mountain. From €81
