Located in Thailand’s Chiang Mai Province, about 80 kilometres from the city, and home to the country’s highest mountain, Inthanon National Park attracts huge numbers of visitors every year. There are several different ways to explore the park that cater to varying budgets, tastes and needs. We’ve looked into all of them and picked out some of our favourites, including a group tour, exploring independently in a rental car, and a private tour with a more personalised touch.
Group Tour
Doi Inthanon National Park is within easy reach of Chiang Mai on a day trip. This small-group tour takes you in and around the park in a small group (the air-conditioned van holds up to nine people). Head up Thailand’s highest peak to the shrine of King Intharawichayanont (good luck trying to pronounce that) and enjoy a short hike along the Angkha Nature Trail. Stupas and local markets also make it onto this lively itinerary. Admission fees and hotel pickup and drop-off are included.

Rent a car
Most visitors to Inthanon National Park are based in the city of Chiang Mai and for maximum independence you might like the idea of renting your own car. There are several car rental companies based in Chiang Mai, including both international and local names. The journey time is around 1.5 hours, with plenty of gorgeous scenery to enjoy along the way – although prepare for windy roads. Once you arrive at the park, there are multiple parking lots, including large facilities at either end of the peak.

Private tour
For a more intimate and exclusive experience, you can book onto a private tour of Inthanon National Park for a small and select groups of family or friends. Starting with a morning hotel pick-up, this all-day private tour lets you explore waterfalls, valleys, and jungles during a scenic 5 kilometre hike. Along the way, your expert guide will tell you all about the local flora and fauna and there’ll also be a stop for a traditional Thai lunch. Groups are limited to 6 people.
