If you’re visiting San Sebastian and would like to stay somewhere with a plum location and  a dash of style but that won’t break the bank, Hotel Avenida might be just the ticket.

Location

The hotel is set on a hill top about a 10-minute walk from Ondarreta Beach overlooking San Sebastian Situated in  the western part of La Concha Bay, the beach is known for its golden sand, calm waters, family-friendly atmosphere and array of activities on offer. A. short drive away is the city centre, with its many attractions including San Sebastián Cathedral and Museo de San Telmo. In the immediate vicinity of the hotel, the hill on which it sits can be traversed via a funicular railway and at the top is a popular amusement park.

Style and character

An easy-going, no-fuss charm makes you feel instantly at home when you enter the hotel. A classic, understated style is accentuated by warm, neutral tones, big windows letting in plenty of light and a relaxed vibe. There’s a hint of old-school elegance too, though it never tips over into feeling outdated. The atmosphere is ideal for kicking back after a day of exploring, sipping a coffee by the pool, and getting into the holiday mood.

Services and facilities

The hotel offers an impressive mix of facilities and services. There’s an outdoor pool for a refreshing swim and a well-equipped gym if you want to stay active. The buffet breakfast (see below) is popular, with a good selection of fresh options to start your day. Free parking is a rare bonus in the city too. The hotel also provides 24-hour reception, luggage storage and bike rentals for exploring.

Rooms

The 50 rooms are all very simple but perfectly pleasant with petrol-blue walls, art work and custom lighting that adds a moody, contemporary touch. The rooms come in three categories: Classic, Superior and Deluxe. The difference between categories is mainly bed size (all are comfortable) and storage space. They are fairly compact, so storage in smaller rooms is limited but there’s always somewhere to hang clothes and a desk to pop belongings on (or from which to work). Bathrooms are compact but have everything you need and are tidy and attractive. They mostly have showers, except for two which come with freestanding bathtubs. All are stocked with Rituals products, bathrobes and hair dryers. Deluxe rooms come with Nespresso machines. Premium room also come with a coffee machine.

Food and drink

A hearty buffet breakfast is served daily in the hotel’s communal lounge area each morning, with plenty of indoor seating available. There are also a few tables on the pretty outdoor terrace where you can enjoy breakfast while soaking up great views over the city and the hotel pool. Options including fresh juices, pastries, hot food and more help set guests up for a day of city sightseeing.

Value for money

With double rooms from €67 (US$56), year-round, we’d recommend Hotel Avenida as the number one best value for money hotel in San Sebastian.
