Known as the city of three cultures and dramatically poised over the Tajo River, the winding medieval streets of this one-time capital of Spain retain countless beguiling traces of its melting-pot past. Moorish flourishes give way to Catholic grandeur and Jewish mystery, as it feels around every corner there’s a new discovery to be made.
Less than an hour out Madrid, Toledo is too often regarded by tourists as something of a day-trip destination, and in that they’re missing out. To stay here overnight is to really travel back in time. For as the great majority of visitors head back to the big city, you’re left almost alone, in personal communication with the historic streets. Here are some hotels to help you make that a possibility.
Hotel Medina de Toledo
From €69/ night
One of the most famous things about Toledo is the view of Toledo. It was painted by one-time resident, ahead-of-his time artist El Greco (to whom a museum in town is dedicated), and while the view you get from the terrace here is not the exact same one as inspired that renaissance outlier, it’s still not-half bad. A perfect spot to sit back and enjoy a cool cerveza at the end of a long day. And the rooms are on point too: air conditioned, comfy, and connected to the internet. Throw in that you’re less than five minutes from Toledo’s main square and you’ve got one of the best value deals in town.
Hospederia Casa de Cisneros
From €55/ night
There’s staying in Toledo and there’s staying in Toledo. This place is most certainly the latter: a 16th Century building built over the remains of an even older Moorish palace, it’s like the history of the city in miniature. It’s also right in there among Toledo’s winding old-town streets. Tastefully furnished, with air conditioning, and en-suites in every room. A great place to stay for those wanting to get up close and personal with the city’s history.
Hotel Casona de la Reyna
From €60/ night
Housed within a building from the 16th Century, and still offering many historic features, the Casona de la Reyna sits just outside the old town, which means more light and views out over the Tajo River. It’s a great, authentic place to stay, full of Castillian charm and modern amenities. Its original fireplace, meanwhile, makes it as great a winter destination as it is a summer one.
Hotel Santa Isabel
From €48/ night
What a bargain this place is! Ideally located just on the edge of the old town, within walking distance of just about every site you’d want to get to, and housed in an authentic, restored 15th Century building. The reception’s open 24 hours and the staff are magnificent. A comfortable, clean place to stay.
Hotel Carlos V
From €75/ night
And here’s our slightly more expensive budget option. Situated right next to Toledo’s Alcázar Fortress and the town’s magnificent cathedral, you come here for the views. Imagine waking up in the morning to see the sun rising over this ancient and beautiful city, and naturally, you’d be in the lap of luxury as well: spacious, nicely decorated rooms with air conditioning included. Necessary for those hot Spanish nights! Worth every penny.
