Far west of Boston is the Massachusetts city of Northampton, a paradise for left-leaning thinkers. Website Epodunk once rated it “the most politically liberal medium-size city in the United States.” This has made Northampton a popular residence and destination for LGBT folks. But it could be a destination for anyone interested in culture (or counterculture), arts and music. Local attractions include the art museum and botanic garden at Smith College, several parks and the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Library.

This charming inn has a very New England-y feel, appearing cozy and quaint. It’s only five minutes by foot from Smith College (and six miles from Hampshire College), making it a good locale for parents and siblings visiting their collegiate kin. And if you’re the type to worry, don’t: each room here comes with a safe, as well as a TV and bathroom. You can further indulge the hearth and home vibe by visiting the on-site garden, or sitting before the crackling wood in the fireplace. Bike rentals make exploring the local scenery even easier. Golf and numerous museums can be found within eight miles (about a 20-minute drive) of this cute inn.

Nestled in Northamptons’s arts district, this Quality Inn proved a very affordable option, with prices usually cheaper than the other hotels we researched. Make no mistake, though, all the amenities are here. Guest rooms are equipped with a microwave, TV, coffeemaker, microwave, and fridge for any leftovers from local cuisine. Pillow-top mattresses add another touch of comfort. Also comforting are free hot breakfast, wifi and coffee. If you aren’t tired after a day of local activities, an indoor heated pool and fitness room can provide a workout.

This property off Interstate 91 has received very high ratings from past guests. It’s located in Holyoke, a 10-15 minute drive from Northampton, but prices appeared reasonable and the highway access is a plus. Like the Autumn Inn and Quality Inn, there’s an assortment of museums nearby. Couples seem to like it especially, and guests have found that it provides good value for the cost. Some of the goodies available include an indoor pool, gym, hot tub and hot breakfast.
