Planning a trip to arguably the wildest city in Europe? Here are the best hostels for ensuring you make the most of your visit in the comfiest way possible.
Here at TravelMag we have blazed through information for over 50 hostels in the city to present you this list of the best five based on price, locations, amenities and much more.
CLINKNOORD
From €22/ night
Clink’s new flagship is a marvellous hostel in a fantastic renovated old building, that still has the original stained glass windows. A free ferry trip across the Ij means the hostel is minutes from Centraal Train Station. ClinkNOORD has volumes of bright, airy social space in an architecturally stunning common area, a bar, art space and even its own fully soundproofed club, so you can party without disturbing other guests. Coupled with cosy rooms this makes Clink the best addition to Amsterdam’s hostel scene.
HOSTELLE
From €16/ night
Move on gentlemen, this is a female only hostel. Designed to offer an added level of security and safety for female travellers in a city well known for lecherous activities, it is no surprise why Hostelle can be quite popular. The hostel comes with a guest kitchen, elevators to floors and is decorated with paintings and vintage furniture. Note that this hostel is a little further from the city centre.
THE FLYING PIG DOWNTOWN
From €20/ night
Smack-bang in the city centre, located right along the Nieuwendijk shopping street, Flying Pig Downtown is hard to beat on location. Breakfast is available but, like in most Amsterdam hostels, is charged extra. The hostel has a good vibe, especially for solo travellers. Given that the location is so central, understandably space is at a premium, which means some of the cheaper rooms are up to a gargantuan 32 people dorm.
ST CHRISTOPHERS INN AT THE WINSTON
From €27/ night
Above a Belushi Bar, meaning decent burgers, St. Christophers is another centrally located hostel that is good value. Some of the edgier room decoration ranges from the not so edgy Homer Simpson to something on the verge of soft-core porno. But that is apt given that the red light district is just a minute away. St. Christophers also has its own nightclub and terrace. It can get loud at night (go figure) so would better suit groups and people who are in the ‘Dam to party.
STAYOKAY AMSTERDAM VONDELPARK
From €29/ night
Well located for trips to the major museums such as Van Gogh or the Rijksmuseum, as well as the lovely Vondelpark, Stayokay is part of Hostelling International so offers discounts for members. The hostel is well laid out with a good sized common area and bar. Security is good at this hostel and breakfast is actually included in the price here. You can also rent a lovely orange bicycle from reception.
