Although it has the title of busiest port in South Africa, it is the miles of white sand beaches that hold the true charm of Durban. The sub-tropical climate along the Indian Ocean makes Durban a great choice for holiday-makers. But whether you are in town for business or leisure, a good hotel can make all the difference to a trip.
Here at TravelMag.com we understand the importance of having a hassle-free hotel stay, and that is why we decided to try and make the choice easier for you by presenting our top five hotels in the city based on factors like price, previous guest reviews and location.
HOLLAND HOUSE B&B
From $71/ night
A highly rated bed and breakfast, Holland House is away from the beach and closer to the port than the other places on our list. Well-appointed rooms all have a kitchenette with an oven and microwave. Or down on the patio you can use the BBQ facilities and the outdoor pool. Breakfast is included offering a number of options, including the full English, and can be brought to the room. Rooms have en-suite bathrooms and have views out over either the sea or the city.
CARTER’S LODGE
From $61/ night
A great location for those who want to explore the area on foot, Carter’s Lodge is situated in La Lucia just minutes from good shopping and restaurants. The beach is only roughly 800m away. Rooms are well-decorated combining modern upholstery with oriental rugs and throws. There is a library on-site where books can be borrowed and read in the garden by the pool, with views out towards to the sea. With breakfast included in the price, this option is especially good value.
TEREMOK MARINE
From $216/ night
Very much the luxury option, Teremok Marine is a fine property with a fantastic range of amenities. On top of the outdoor pool and terrace customary to hotels in South Aftrica, there is also a fitness centre, spa and massage services. Located on the coast only half a mile from Umhlanga Rocks Beach, there is even a free evening shuttle bus to local restaurants offered. It is the little extras that make the big difference, and the on-site bar and quirky rooms make the higher price more than worthwhile.
CAZA BEACH GUESTHOUSE

Moments from La Lucia Beach and with its own pool as well, the onus is on relaxation at Caza Beach Guesthouse. For a very reasonable price, comfortable, air-conditioned rooms with modern decoration all have an en-suite bathroom stocked with complimentary toiletries. All rooms come equipped with a microwave and coffee making facilities. Breakfast is included in the price and a packed lunch is available on request.
