There’s a real melting pot feel to Maastricht. Not only can you glimpse elements of France and Belgium in its buildings, the town’s heritage stretches way back to the time of Rome. It’s a great place to wander round, just soaking up the atmosphere, with a strong university culture and some terrific restaurants and bars.
Hotel-wise, we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. For such a small town, Maastricht’s got some great bedding-places on offer. Clearly the word is getting out about this often overlooked gem on the map of Europe’s cultural scene. We’ve made sure to recommend only the best value for your stay.
Hotel de la Bourse
From €78/ night
So, its façade may look a bit 70s council block, but this centrally located hotel has some great staff and offers bags of charm. Among its selling points is the terrace that aprons out onto Maastricht Market Square, and indeed, that most rooms have views of that same place, making them great places from which to sit back and observe the world. Amenities are basic but they are there – expect TVs and free WiFi – and there’s a 24-hour reception to resolve any late night niggles.
Hotel Le Virage
From €99/ night
A real find! Oozing character, this “corner hotel” is right in the middle of Maastricht, though still somehow on something of a quiet street. It’s housed in a lovely period building and is full of traditional details (plus a few more up to date ones, see the croc skin in the picture!). Also, not worth missing out on, is this hotel’s restaurant, which serves up mind blowing, seasonal cuisine. There’s Internet in all rooms, en-suites, and even refrigerators; as we said, a real find!
Hotel Les Charmes
From €99/ night
Charming by name, charming by nature? You better believe it when it comes to this cracking hotel right in the middle of Maastricht’s old quarter. All the rooms here are fabulous, though there’s no single style that all conform too. Some relish in the history of the building, with earth tone interiors and exposed wood beams, while others ply a more modern route. Whichever you plump for, though, you’re sure to have a great stay. All are, naturally, equipped with the amenities required by a modern traveller: WiFi, TVs etc.
Zenden Design Hotel
From €89/ night
Can it possibly be this cheap to stay in a work of art? Well… Yes! Unbelievably this hotel, the design of which was nominated as one of the best new interior designs worldwide, is firmly in Maastricht’s budget category. All the rooms are unique, though a theme of cool sophisticated minimalism runs through each. There’s also – it keeps getting better and better – a swimming pool: its deep blue waters located underneath the building’s original vaulted cellar. Essentially, there’s value, and then there’s this place! And it’s not like a stay here means scrimping on comfort in place of style. As well as being beautiful, it’s got all the amenities you’d expect from a three star hotel.
Boutique Hotel Sint Jacob
From €84/ night
Like stepping into the Dutch Golden Age, with interior design palates of a Van Eyck or a Vemeer, this boutique hotel represents yet another of Maastricht’s seemingly impossible deals. With a delightful garden out back, and all the regular features of a four star hotel (that’s right, four stars!) thoughtfully provided. We try not to pick favourites here at TravelMag, but this is undoubtedly a tremendous place to spend your stay.
