The Strait of Gibraltar, the narrow stretch separating Europe from Africa, is one of the biggest maritime corridors between Africa and Europe. Unsurprisingly, dozens of ferries travel across this passage every day, but the route between Algeciras in Spain and Tangier in Morocco is one of the most popular with tourists. Currently, seven ferry companies operate along this route, offering a combined 46 sailings per day in as little as 60 minutes. But which should you choose? We’ve analysed three of the most popular ferries offering sailings between the two cities, comparing duration, amenities on board, price and customer feedback.

Africa Morocco Links (AML)

AML (previously Attica Group and BMCE Bank of Africa Group) offers the fastest ferry for passengers, trucks and private vehicles from Algeciras to Tangier, with an average journey time of just one hour. Most journeys are made aboard the Morocco Star, which offers 66 cabins and room for 935 passengers. On board, there’s a selection of hot and cold drinks on offer, as well as a self-service restaurant offering a wide variety of cooked meals and desserts. There are also shopping facilities and free WiFi access points on board. AML is generally well reviewed, with customers commenting on helpful staff and comfortable amenities on board. It currently offers nine services per day.

Balearia

Balearia only offers seven sailings per day and journey times are slightly longer at 90 minutes, but the company is better-known than AML. You can also bring your car onboard for just $85. The route uses one of the most modern ships in the fleet, the Napoles, and customers frequently comment on comfort and amenities in online reviews. Onboard there are shopping facilities, a sleek lounger area, a dedicated bar and cafeteria and luggage lockers for foot passengers. It’s pet-friendly too.

Trasmed

Trasmed is a huge ferry operator; it’s the largest ferry company in Spain and one of the largest in Europe. Like Balearia, it offers seven sailings per day though ships tend to be larger and can be booked right up until the last minute. Sailings average 90 minutes, though there are faster options earlier in the morning. Passengers can choose from onboard cabin accommodation or reserved seating. There’s free WiFi on board, a restaurant and bar and shopping facilities too.
