Saihoji, often referred to as Kokedera or the Moss Temple, is a remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site located in West Kyoto. This serene temple is renowned for its breathtaking garden, which boasts an estimated 120 varieties of moss, inspiring generations of Japanese garden design. Originally a villa for Prince Shotoku, it was transformed into a temple during the Nara Period, then a Zen temple under the guidance of Zen priest Muso Soseki in 1339. It was during this period that work on its exquisite gardens began. Today, nearly seven centuries later, visitors have the unique opportunity to engage in traditional Buddhist practices, including the copying of sutras and chanting, surrounded by the tranquil beauty of meticulously curated moss landscapes. While winter sees the garden closed for maintenance, the temple’s stunning architecture and art remain accessible to those seeking a peaceful retreat.

It’s easy enough to reach the temple by public transport. Kokedera is a 20-minute walk from Matsuo Taisha Station on the Hankyu Arashiyama Line. The easiest way to reach the temple from Kyoto Station is to take the Karasuma Subway Line to Shijo Station, transfer to the Hankyu Kyoto Line to Katsura Station, and then switch to the Hankyu Arashiyama Line for a five-minute ride to Matsuo Taisha Station. The journey takes around 30 minutes and currently costs 460 yen. Alternatively, you could take the bus number 73, which departs 1-3 times per hour from Kyoto Station.

Interested in purchasing in a ticket? Here are two tried-and-tested ways to discover and explore the temple.

Guided tour

For those looking to experience multiple sights in one day, this West Kyoto tour is perfect. It begins at 10 AM at Hankyu Kami-Katsura Station, where guests meet their knowledgeable guide, who is available to answer any questions throughout the journey. The first stop is Saihoji, with ticket reservations included in the price. After exploring Saihoji, the itinerary continues to Togetsukyo Bridge, Tenryuji Temple, Bamboo Forest, and Okochi Sanso Villa. The tour lasts approximately seven hours and can be customised to your preferences following the visit to Saihoji. Reservations are required at least 22 days in advance. The cost covers reservations and tour interpretation but excludes the Saihoji entrance fee, transport, and lunch. From 50,000 JPY per person.

Self-guided tour

If you prefer to see the sights at your own pace, you might want to consider reserving a ticket for the temple yourself. While you won’t benefit from the expertise of a local guide, this option does give you the flexibility to stay as long as you would like. However, advanced reservations for the temple are essential. You can book your tickets on the official English reservation system for dates starting two months before and up until the day before your visit. Keep in mind that spots are limited. On select days, you can also enhance your experience with special visiting programs that include unique activities for an additional fee. From 4,000 JPY plus a service fee of 110 yen for online reservations per person.
