Henry County is approximately 20 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta, and while it separates itself from the high-rises on the city skyline it is home to more than 250,000 residents. There is a small town feel with big city access, and Henry County stands on its own as a place of interest to those traveling from the north to the sunshine of the south. Go setjetting

Setjetting, the act of visiting filming locations from television and movies, is a trending sub-category of travel. And thanks to Georgia’s lucrative incentives for filmmakers and production companies, there are plenty of spots to visit around the state, including several in Henry County. Fans of the cult zombie show “The Walking Dead” can visit the spot where Glen “died,” and hardcore fans can lay down in the chalk outline of his body in an alley in Hampton. The county also claims filming sites for “Hunger Games,” “Zombieland,” and—for now—the high school used in “Stranger Things” can be found in Stockbridge.

Visit Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary

Take a walk on the wild side at this home for abused, abandoned, or surrendered animals. The non-profit sanctuary houses hundreds of animals, from everyday livestock to exotic birds. Schools and community groups benefit from the educational aspect provided, but any visitor can enter for a small fee and meet bears, lions, tigers, and more. Noah’s Ark was the home of the famous BLT brothers, a bear (Baloo), a lion (Leo), and a tiger (Shere Khan) who all lived together in harmony, despite the rationale of experts. Only Baloo is left, and he celebrated his 23rd birthday in 2024.

Enjoy the NASCAR Experience

Drivers, start your engines! Henry County is home to the Atlanta Motor Speedway and twice a year hosts a NASCAR race—America’s most popular motor sport. Before the excitement of the race, ticketed fans can hang out in Bootleggers bar or visit the infield to catch a glimpse of their favorite team, driver, or car—truly unique things to do in Henry County. Outside, a free NASCAR Fan Experience allows hands-on fun for all ages. Plus, there is more to do at Atlanta Motor Speedway than attending a NASCAR race. When the “big boys” are not in town the track is used for public driving experiences, car shows, and concerts.

Throw some discs

Do not call them Frisbee’s, because disc golf is a serious sport in Henry County. One of the most popular disc golf spots is at J.P. Moseley Park and the 37-hole course is one of the highest rated courses in the state. With rules similar to golf, and different discs named after clubs, disc golf was formalized in 1976 when Ed Headrick designed the disc pole hole. The sport gained popularity through organized tournaments. The headquarters of the Professional Disc Golf Association is in nearby Appling County. A fee course at Sandy Creek Park Disc Golf Course has 27 holes.
