Situated in Finland’s Lapland region, the small city of Levi may be best known for its huge ski resort, but there’s plenty more to enjoy here too.

The largest ski resort in the whole of Finland, no less, attracts large numbers of skiing enthusiasts throughout the year. But if you’re seeking respite from the pistes, or find yourself in Levi for reasons beyond skiing, there’s a whole lot more to this town than may initially meet the eye. Below are 7 of the most unique things to see and do in Levi that don’t involve hurtling down its snowy hills at high-octane speeds.

Admire a true natural phenomenon

The breathtaking natural light display that appears in the sky around the Arctic region is one of the natural wonders of the word. Commonly referred to as the Aurora Borealis, or more often the Northern Lights, the jaw-dropping display is a major attraction for Levi visitors who, once night falls, can marvel at its kaleidoscopic colours by venturing out of the city where artificial light pollution won’t impair the views. The lights can be seen independently, or for assured sightings you can book an organised tour during which an expert guide will navigate you to the best viewing spots.

Join a thrilling husky safari

Dogs have been put to work as a means of transport in Finland for hundreds, if not thousands, of years, and there is no better way to immerse yourselves in the nation’s canine traditions than by embarking on a husky safari. There are a wide number of local companies in Levi offering husky tours that take you deep into the wilderness of Lapland. Before heading out, you’ll receive a husky driving school tutorial, with guidance from professional guides on how to get to grips with your sleigh. Once strapped in, the huskies will do the bulk of the work, allowing you to take in the remarkable landscapes you hurtle again. There’ll also be a chance to learn all about Lapland’s unique ecosystem and cultures that have helped shape the region.

Visit an Arctic-themed adventure park

The snowy landscapes of Levi may be atmospheric enough for many, but you can turn the dial up even further by visiting Arcandia, a magical adventure park brimming with mesmerising rides, games and attractions. Whether it’s fantasy, action-adventure or a combination of both that gets your juices flowing, there’s enough here to satisfy the most vivid of imaginations. Astonishing sets, dazzling light, dramatic smoke and startling sound effects all combine to create a world of fantasy and adventure. Among the park’s main highlights are the Northern Magician’s show, which fuses contemporary sleight of hand with the ancient lore of northern mysticism.

Delve into Finland’s rich native history

Known as the Sami, the indigenous people of northern Finland are celebrated at the UNESCO Observatory Cultural Village. Located in Kittilä, a short drive south of Levi, this renowned cultural centre is home to a vast indoor and outdoor exhibition area dedicated to the Sami people and their rich heritage. Visitors can come and discover thousands of years of history, culture and mythology, as well as learn about the modern era of the Sami people through images, storytelling, and interactive activities. The exhibition can be visited independently or as part of a guided tour.

Try your hand at ice fishing

In most parts of the world, fishing in winter is a hiding to nothing, but in Finland, it’s all part of the adventure. During the winter months, Levi and its surroundings are blessed with a wide number of frozen ponds, lakes and rivers that are abundant with trout and other resilient fish species that make for fruitful fishing adventures. There are a number of local companies operating in and around Levi that offer ice fishing tours for everyone from beginners to seasoned anglers, all hosted by experienced guides who will show you how to make a hole in the ice and the best techniques to catch fish, as well as (inevitably) regaling you with tales of their biggest catches.

Warm up at an indulgent spa

After all that chilly adventure, what better way to recuperate than in the warm and welcoming environs of a luxurious spa? The Foxfires Arctic Spa Sauna Experience invites guests to indulge in a quintessential Finnish experience by ensconcing themselves in a traditional wood-fired sauna and outdoor hot tub. With views of the peaceful forest and dozens of fairy lights and candles all around you, it is truly a feast for the senses. And if, after all that relaxing, you’ve worked up an appetite you can retreat to an authentic ‘Kota’ (laplander’s hut) featuring a cosy fireplace and a communal BBQ grill where you can cook up a treat by bringing your own food and drink.

Explore a reindeer farm

Located on the outskirts of Levi, the Sammuntupa Reindeer Farm gives visitors the chance to see what daily life is like on a traditional reindeer farm. As well as dozens of reindeers on display, the farm also hosts interactive activities including adrenaline-fuelled reindeer sledge rides through the snowy forest and the chance to feed reindeers for yourself. There’s also the chance to see reindeers being herded by expert farmers and to ask any questions about these famous festive creatures and how they like to spend their days. Complimentary hot juice is also provided to help stave off the chills.
