When it comes to experiencing Tokyo’s fierce foodie scene, the Toyosu Market is a must-visit. Since its relocation from the iconic Tsukiji Market in 2018, Toyosu has transformed into a modern culinary hub, attracting food lovers and curious tourists alike. The highlight of any visit is undoubtedly the early-morning tuna auction, where naka-oroshi (intermediate wholesalers) engage in high-stakes bidding for premium bluefin tuna from around the globe. With its glass-walled viewing platforms and meticulously organised facilities, Toyosu offers a totally unique perspective on the bustling fish trade. You could attempt the trip alone, but one of the most enjoyable ways to experience Toyosu is on a guided tour. Here are three of the best.

Toyosu Tuna Auction Tour

This four-hour early morning tour is ideal for those looking to get an insider track on one of Tokyo’s most famous foodie experiences, without any extra frills or fuss. Led by the English-speaking Mickie, the tour kicks off at 5 am ready for the 05:30 am auction. As well as diving into the history of the market, guests also benefit from local insights into the sights and scenes along the way. After the auction, Mickie whisks guests off for a local sushi breakfast, followed by a stroll through the charming old market town of Tsukiji. Prices do not include breakfast. Tours are limited to four to six people, though you can pay extra for a small-group or private tour. From 12,000 JPY per person.

This popular three-hour tour gives visitors the chance to compare Tokyo’s two most famous fish markets: the old Tsujiji market with the new Toyosu Tuna Auction. Tours begin with a hotel pick-up on foot, followed by an hour-long tour of Toyosu Market’s three main buildings, accessed by a series of walkways. From here, it’s a short trip to Toyoso Market, once the largest wholesale fish and seafood market in the world. Guests can choose the order, but most begin with Toyosu to catch the lively auction.
